Welcome to STAR EMU FARM & HATCHIRES. It is founded by Mrs. Sangeeta Yadav in year 2005. From 40 pairs we had started our farm in pune….today we have over 200 pairs of EMU . STAR EMU FARM is first ever emu farm to have started hatcheries in UTTAR PRADESH (U.P.), BIHAR, JHARKHAND, UTTARAKHAND, WEST BANGAL and M.P. We believe in providing healthy emu birds and their products.
The Emu was an important source of meat to the Aborigines in the areas to which it was endemic. Emu fat was used as bush medicine, and was rubbed on the skin. It also served as a valuable lubricant. It was mixed with ochre to make the traditional paint for ceremonial body adornment, as well as to oil wooden tools and utensils such as the coolamon.
BACKGROUNDIn India, Chicken is the most popular of the poultry species followed by ducks & quails, of late with some popularization the flightless emu is leaving its footprint across the plains of India, with an increasing number of farmers commercially rearing the ostrich-size bird.
From a single farm in 1996, there are today 20000 emu farms in 9 states, with a majority of them in,UTTER PRADESH,MAHARASHTRA & ANDHARA PRADESH other progressive states of India. The reason for the growth of emu farms today is the increasing demand for the bird’s meat and oil, which is believed to have medicinal properties, especially for treating joint pains.
For large scale production of meat oil and skin there is a long term potential for breeding and rearing of more than 1750000 Emus. To Promote such innovative project activity in the state this can accelerate capital formation in the rural area. NABARD, MRO, Pune has taken a decision to formulate a Model project for rearing of Emus as there is increasing demand for such unit in coming years.
INTRODUCTIONDiversification is the key to success in any enterprise: similarly, we need to diversify to another species of poultry in order to reap more profit. Considering this let us discuss about Emu, breed of bird which attains up to 60 kg weight and 6.6 ft. height on maturity. Emu belongs to Ratite family of birds and is the third biggest species after Ostrich and Cassowary. The birds have small wings & are incapable of flying. Australia is the place of origin for the birds. Emu is a social bird with whitish complexion. The birds live in groups and can thrive under varying climate conditions ranging from 0° C. to 56° C. These birds are Omnivorous and eat leaves, vegetables, fruits, insects, and worms. They can be fed modified poultry feed.
It is clarified by the chief conservatory of forest, GOM, Pune that Emu is an exotic bird, and it has not been included in any of the schedules of wildlife (protection) Act, 1972. The provisions of Wild Life Protection Act, 1972 and rules made there under are not applicable for these birds. As such no permission from forest Department is necessary for rearing, farming and selling of these birds.
Recognizing the economic importance, Australian Government in 1975 Started domesticating these birds living in Jungles establishing big farms. This Activity spread to America, France and other European countries in the early eighties. It is reported that there are about 10000 Emu farms in America and Emu association was association was established in 1993. The activity has also spread to China, Japan, Malaysia and Koria.
